Mojokerto – Almost all sectors have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, including plastic. The pandemic period, which began in 2020, has greatly reduced the turnover of MSME actors, because the existing situation is focused on preventing the transmission of healthy people and healing sick people. "So it is very, very hard for the industry, especially those that can't be operational," said Willy Tandiyo, one of the perpetrators of recycling plastic waste.

Willy explained that basically, very few plastic recycling industries have capital power. "A lot of them depend on bank loans, cooperative loans, where the interest on these loans must be paid regularly".  Even though the company is experiencing financial problems, and many are losing money. So that the company can continue to operate, it should have an output product or a finished product. "There are 2 (two) groups in the plastic recycling industry in Indonesia, namely those that are export-oriented and those who are able to produce finished products," added one of the owners of the plastic recycling business.

Maintaining the industry that is run is not just looking for cost benefits . But also pay attention to the availability of job opportunities around industrial areas. "Many companies are reducing their employees due to declining sales turnover, so if the companies can continue to operate, at least the unemployment rate will not increase in times like this," said Willy, who also serves as ADUPI coach.

Mojokerto – The plastic recycling industry has grown a lot in line with the increasing public demand for managing plastic waste. Willy Tandiyo is a plastic recycling industry player who has been running his business since 1987. His industry is located close to Mount Penanggungan, on the outskirts of Mojokerto Regency. According to him, the plastic recycling industry is considered to have good prospects in the future.

Willy said the plastic recycling industry has the potential to continue to grow, "just like the type of PET plastic which has independently entered the PVC market". The twists and turns of the business journey have been passed, and various efforts are still being made to advance the practice of plastic recycling. "Recycling plastic is not an easy matter, what needs to be considered is the issue of purity so that it is 100% safe from contaminants, both from other types of plastic or also from something that was attached to the previous plastic". This is so that the resulting product meets the established standards. "In the manufacture of recycled plastic products, especially those that will be used to package food, must meet standards, food contact requirements" he added.

Willy also reminded that recycling plastic must pay attention to the processing of B3 waste so as not to pollute the environment around industrial areas. "Technically, B3 waste treatment cannot be just thrown away, it must go through long stages in terms of water concentration and the remaining slurry from washing should not be disposed of carelessly," concluded the middle-aged man.
